Apparently, Simon Mkalla jumped ship and joined Mwakwere’s opponent, Issah Chipera of the Orange Democratic Party.

ODM is scheduled to hold its Kwale county nominations on Wednesday, April 19.

According to Citizen TV, Chipera believes Mkalla abandoned Mwakwere because it was expected the former Kenyan ambassador to Tanzania would join ODM instead of the Wiper Party he ended up in.

“When Mwakwere was in Tanzania, Mkalla was representing him as his deputy in all the ODM meetings. But when Mwakwere came back he stayed in ODM for only two weeks and jumped to Wiper that is why Mkalla has come back because he cannot leave ODM,” said Chipera on Tuesday, April 18.

Mkalla, personally, failed to explain his reasons for jumping ship.

His exit comes a week after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka endorsed the duo for Kwale governor and deputy governor.

Months ago, Mwakwere announced his decision to take a second stab at the Kwale gubernatorial seat after coming in third in 2013 to Governor Salim Mvurya.

Picking Mkalla as his running mate was strategic considering Mkalla came in second in the last gubernatorial election too.

However, Mwakwere’s decision to join Wiper after allegedly being denied a direct nomination certificate was what propelled him to ignore ODM for Kalonzo’s party.

Now, he is set to go up against incumbent Mvurya, Chipera, County Assembly Speaker Sammy Ruwa, former PS for Forestry and Wildlife Mohammed Mwarapayo and businessman James Gereza Dena on August 8.
